Mona Lisa Smile

Saw it today. The down and dirty is that it's Worth a Matinee. I tend to dislike Julia Roberts but she was real in this movie. It had a happy and very un-hollywood ending and I like un-hollywood. Mona Lisa Smile has many up and coming actors that I love including Maggie Gyllenhaal and Kirsten Dunst. It's nice to see them in a woman-centered movie.

I disagree with the folks over at here who say that the movie's message is "Sexism is bad". I came away feeling like it's message is "Women keeping other women 'in line' with sexist roles is bad". This is a message that we don't hear enough about--internalized oppression and our own enforcement of it against each other helps to keep us oppressed.

I also disagreed with afterellen.com about the lesbian character in Mona Lisa Smile. Nice that there was one. Not so nice that she handed out birth control. I worked at Planned Parenthood and I know that the not so Right think that we're all Lesbians. This movie is just more proof.

Sigh.

Tee hee. I found another queer movie blogger. She's in my links.
